Our Desert Tour from Fes to Marrakech offers a rich three-day experience provided by Marrakech Tours Specialist. You’ll depart from the historic city of Fes, cross the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, pass through cedar forests and oases, ride camels into the golden sands near Merzouga, explore canyon gorges, and finally arrive in bustling Marrakech. This isn’t just a drive; it’s a full-on escape into the heart of Morocco’s south-east.
Over three days you’ll see contrasting scenery: peaceful mountains, lush valleys, desert dunes and small-town life along the way. You’ll travel in comfort with our experienced driver/guide, stay in carefully selected lodgings including a desert camp, enjoy Moroccan cuisine, and feel like you’ve covered a full region rather than just a single destination. Let us handle the logistics so you can simply soak it in.
These highlights give you a snapshot of this tour’s rhythm: mountain morning, desert afternoon, canyon next day, arrival city on the final evening.
Your tour starts in Fes where we pick you up from your hotel or riad early in the morning. From there we travel through the cedar-covered slopes of Ifrane and Azrou in the Middle Atlas Mountains, with chances to spot Barbary macaques in the forest.
Lunch is taken in Midelt, a high-plain town known for its mineral-rich surroundings. After the meal you continue eastwards, passing the vast Ziz Valley with its palmeraie and fortress-like kasbahs, until the landscape begins to stretch into desert flats. In the late afternoon you arrive at Merzouga near the Erg Chebbi dunes.
As the sun begins to dip we saddle up camels and ride into the dunes for a sunset moment that feels both wild and peaceful. The evening ends at a desert camp where dinner is served and you spend the night under open skies.
Wake early to catch the sunrise over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the changing light on the sand is unforgettable. After breakfast, you depart Merzouga and travel toward the Todra Gorges, passing palm groves, small desert towns and rocky expanses. At Todra you’ll explore the canyon floor, where steep cliffs rise on either side and the river flows quietly through. It’s a great moment to stretch your legs, take a walk and absorb the scale of the gorge.
Your route then continues to Dades Valley. As you arrive, the valley opens up around you with dramatic rock formations rising from the palm-lined gorge. You’ll spend the night in a hotel or guesthouse in the valley, enjoy dinner, rest and prepare for the final leg.
On your final day you depart Dades after breakfast and head toward Ouarzazate. Along the way you’ll pass through the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs”, sweeping palm oases and historic adobe fortresses. A stop in Ouarzazate offers a chance to explore its kasbahs or film-studio heritage if you choose.
After lunch you continue on the High Atlas mountain roads, climbing toward the Tizi n’Tichka pass before descending into Marrakech. Late afternoon marks your arrival in Marrakech where we drop you off at your hotel or riad. The journey ends, but the experience stays with you.
This route includes significant driving on Day 1 and Day 3 (mountains, plains, desert). Expect long stretches with stops for views and rest. Estimated travel times vary depending on pace.
At the desert camp you will spend a night in or near the dunes of Erg Chebbi. Camels take you in at sunset, you share dinner under the stars, and you sleep surrounded by desert silence.
