This 3-day Mount Toubkal Trek from Marrakech combines physical adventure with unforgettable scenery. It’s designed for travelers who want to step away from the city and experience the raw beauty of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Expect peaceful valleys, rocky ridges, and panoramic summit views. You’ll hike alongside a local guide and mule team, spend nights in authentic mountain lodges, and feel a real sense of achievement when you reach the top of North Africa’s highest peak. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a first-timer looking for a challenge, this trek offers a perfect mix of effort, reward, and culture.
We begin with a pick-up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the morning. The drive heads south into the High Atlas Mountains, passing rural villages and climbing through the valley until we reach the village of Imlil (approx. 1,740 m).
Imlil is the gateway for trekking to Mount Toubkal. After a brief rest and introduction to your guide and mule team, we begin the hike through the Mizane Valley. The trail winds past the village of Aroumd and ascends gently into alpine terrain, with views of terraced fields, Berber villages and rugged peaks around. As altitude rises, the landscape opens out and you’ll feel the air change.
By afternoon we reach the base camp (approx. 3,200 m) near Toubkal Refuge. Here you settle in, enjoy tea, dinner and a good rest, the summit attempt begins early tomorrow.
Day 2 is the big one. You’ll rise well before dawn and set off for the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m) as daylight breaks. The route climbs steadily: from the base camp a trail crosses scree slopes and switchbacks upward. As you ascend the summit ridge, you’ll find rewarding views stretching from the Atlas range to the plains below.
Reaching the top brings a real sense of accomplishment, the highest point in North Africa under your feet. After celebrating and taking in the panorama, we begin the descent back to base camp. Lunch is at the refuge, then the trail descends further toward Imlil. Late afternoon finds you back in village terrain, arriving in Imlil ready for the final trip to Marrakech.
On your final day you wake in Imlil, enjoy breakfast and take a gentle morning stroll around the village or relax in the mountain air. Then you board your private vehicle for the scenic drive back to Marrakech.
Along the route you’ll pass high valleys, mountain villages and perhaps stop for tea or lunch in the foothills. Arriving back in Marrakech in the afternoon, your trek draws to a close, you’ll be dropped at your hotel or riad, tired yet filled with memories of high peaks, crisp mountain air and a summit achieved.
The trek involves significant hiking at altitude, especially on Day 2 reaching 4,167 m. It is non-technical (no climbing gear required) but you must be in good physical condition.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer milder temperatures and less snow. In winter the route may require crampons and more gear.
Sturdy trekking boots, warm layers for summit morning, water, sun protection, and perhaps trekking poles. Some sections include scree slopes.
While the route is non-technical, altitude and steep slopes can make it challenging. A guide and proper pace help. Many operators recommend prior trekking experience.
Yes, you may choose private group, upgrade lodging, or extend the trip. Contact us at Marrakech Tours Specialist for customisation.
